San Diego Comic Con 2017
Some of This Year’s Highlights In the World of Superheroes
by Phil Perich for the Capes and Lunatics Blog
As with every year, an overflow of news is coming from Comic Con, especially superhero news. With more and more of their stories coming to the big and small screens, there is no shortage of live action super hero stories to choose from. Here is just a tiny sampling of some of the news and previews we got from Comic Con 2017.
The Defenders (August 18, 2017)
The street level activities of the Marvel Universe grow even larger and grow closer together as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are about to join forces in the upcoming eight episode Defenders Netflix series. We’ve already seen early footage but this weekend featured a trailer with a Stan Lee voiceover and first look at footage from the Punisher series coming later this year. We also got another teaser of Matt Murdock in church confessing the “sins” of his other life.
Thor: Ragnarok (November 3, 2017)
Were you someone who sat through Captain America: Civil War and asked “Where are Thor and the Hulk”? We've already seen one trailer for the third movie in the Thor series, but this Comic Con brought us the second trailer this weekend featuring more with the Hulk, including Bruce Banner and what appears to be a more intelligent version of the green goliath. We also saw Thor teaming up with his trickster brother Loki, probably to face Hela who appears to destroy Asgard, home of the gods. Thor seems to be on another planet while fighting in the gladiator arena. Will Thor and the Hulk perhaps meet the Guardians of the Galaxy and bring them to Earth to help in the battle against Thanos?
Justice League (November 17, 2017)
Continuing the theme so far, we got a new trailer for the Justice League movie. Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg against the forces of Apokolips. We've even gotten looks at JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. And who is the off screen figure that arrives at the end? And while rumors were flying early in the weekend that Ben Affleck would no longer be portraying Batman/Bruce Wayne after this movie, by Saturday night Ben was quick to shoot down those rumors saying he and the creative forces behind the DCEU wanted to continue working together as long as possible.
Captain Marvel (March 8, 2019)
Before this weekend, not much had been announced about the Captain Marvel movie except it would star Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. This weekend we learned that not only would the movie be set in the 1990’s and Captain Marvel would be working with Nick Fury, but the antagonists would be the villainous alien race known as the Skrulls. What does this mean for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? While Fox Studios has the rights to the Fantastic Four, the Skrulls primary enemies, does this mean they never had the rights to the alien race? Or is there a deal in the works similar to the one Sony made with the MCU for Spider-Man? Is the first family of Marvel finally coming home?
Spawn (TBA)
Rumors have been swirling for years now, but we finally got the announcement this weekend, Todd McFarlane has a new Spawn movie in development with Blumhouse Productions. While no details are available at present, hopefully this new iteration of Spawn will take it’s cues from the comics and the HBO animated series and not the original 1997 movie from New Line.
So those were just a few of the MANY news items we got this weekend from San Diego. What news from Comic Con caught your attention? Let me know!
