"What do you think of that, now, eh? A Viking helmet!"
"Maybe."
"What do you mean, 'Maybe'?! What do you think it is, a space helmet for a cow?"
-- The First Doctor and Steven Taylor, Doctor Who: "The Time Meddler"
Hello again, everyone! Special guest companion DJ Nik returns to Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast to help me discuss "The Time Meddler", the ninth serial from Doctor Who Season 2 in 1965, starring William Hartnell as the First Doctor, Maureen O'Brien as Vicki, Peter Purves as Steven Taylor, and introducing Peter Butterworth as The Monk!
In this episode, DJ Nik and I discuss things like DJ Nik bringing a cosmopolitan feel to the podcast, the Monk being a prototype Master, the first time we meet someone from the Doctor and Susan's home planet of Gallifrey, the Doctor and the Monk's clash of time travel ethics, Steven and Vicki replacing Ian and Barbara, my rocking the official Whiskey & Cigarettes Show t-shirt, the recovery of all four episodes of "The Time Meddler", the missing 12 seconds, Hartnell and Troughton era cast members taking a week off for vacation, Saxon wife Edith greeting everyone with tons of food and supplies, Edith being the brains of the Saxons, Doctor Who co-creator Verity Lambert's last story, the Doctor as Ulysses and being a new kind of hero that fights with his brain, the Doctor being welcoming to Steven compared to his distrust of Ian and Barbara, Steven's initial skepticism of being in a time machine, Steven's stuffed panda mascot HiFi, the Monk's plan to shore up King Harold so he doesn't lose the Battle of Hastings, the Monk's really elaborate checklist scroll, #MonkLife selfies with historical figures, The Monk being the Mr. Mxyzptlk to The Master's Lex Luthor, the Monk making a huge English breakfast for the Doctor, the Monk's Mark 4 TARDIS vs. the Doctor's Type 40 TARDIS, the Doctor's decision to maroon the Monk in 1066, our favorite quotes of the story, my Reverse the Reverse the Polarity segment, new listener feedback from Holly Mac, my finally getting to discuss a Peter Davison story, our tribute to the late, great Terrance Dicks, and more!
