DOOM PATROL Casts Michelle Gomez as Madame Rouge

Hopefully, the Doom Patrol remembers to say something nice.

Deadline is reporting that the HBO Max series Doom Patrol, based on the DC Comics superteam, has cast Michelle Gomez as the supervillain Madame Rouge.

According to the article, Gomez will be a series regular for the show's upcoming third season, with Madame Rouge described as "the DC Universe’s complicated and electrifying eccentric, who arrives at Doom Manor with a very specific mission…if only she could remember it."

Madame Rouge's introduction also hints at the appearance of the Doom Patrol's archenemies the Brotherhood of Evil, which included Madame Rouge as a member.  Previously, the Season 1 episode "Penultimate Patrol", featured a flashback to the 1940s with Eric Morden, the future Mr. Nobody, telling his girlfriend Milly that he was fired from the Brotherhood of Evil by The Brain and replaced with an intelligent, French gorilla (Monsieur Mallah).

Gomez, 54, is best known as Missy, the first female incarnation of The Master, on the BBC series Doctor Who, and as Lilith/Madam Satan on the Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.  She's also appeared in episodes of Gotham, The Flight Attendant, DuckTales (2020), Bad Education, and Highlander: The Raven.

Created in 1964 by Arnold Drake and Bruno Premiani, Madame Rouge first appeared in Doom Patrol (vol.1) #86 as Laura De Mille, a French stage actress.  After an automobile accident, she developed a dual good/evil split personality.  At this point, she attracted the notice of The Brain and his associate Monsieur Mallah.  With Mallah's help, the Brain performed surgery on De Mille that was, from his perspective, successful, sublimating her good personality and allowing her evil personality to remain dominant.  As Madame Rouge, De Mille became the only female member of the Brotherhood of Evil, and assisted the Brotherhood in its continuing conflicts against the Doom Patrol.  At first, Madame Rouge was simply a master of disguise; subsequent surgery by the Brain eventually gave her the ability to alter her appearance and stretch her limbs.

Later, Rouge's split personality manifested again, with her good personality occasionally appearing.  Rouge was romantically linked to the Doom Patrol's leader, Niles Caulder, The Chief, who was able to help Rouge overcome her evil side and ally with the Doom Patrol.  Ultimately, Rouge's mind reverted to its evil state, causing her to seek vengeance against both the Brotherhood of Evil and the Doom Patrol for their previous interference.  She was apparently successful in murdering both groups.

Years later, surviving Doom Patrol member Robotman and the Teen Titans tracked down Rouge and her ally, General ZahlBeast Boy (then known as Changeling) killed Rouge, although at the moment of her death, her good side apparently manifested.  She forgave Changeling and called to Niles, her apparent true love.

Gomez will be the first actress to portray Madame Rouge in live-action, although the character has appeared in the animated series Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go! (voiced by Hynden Walch), and the DC Nation Doom Patrol animated short "The Spy Within the Doom Patrol" (voiced by Debra Wilson).

Doom Patrol is expected to return to HBO Max for Season 3 sometime in late 2021.

DOOM PATROL Season 2 Extended Trailer Teases Red Jack and the Candlemaker

We have so many questions.

A new extended trailer for the upcoming second season of the DC Universe/HBO Max series Doom Patrol has been released, giving us the first look at the TV series' versions of notable Doom Patrol enemies Red Jack and the Candlemaker.

The two-minute, ten-second trailer opens with Cyborg/Vic Stone (Joivan Wade) asking new character Roni Evers (Karen Obilom) if she's ready for some sort of procedure.

Roni, who is lying on a table and appears to have a heavily-scarred body, responds with a wink, "Booyah."

We then see Robotman/Cliff Steele (voice of Brendan Fraser) and Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), who are still miniaturized after the events of the Season 1 finale, "Ezekiel Patrol".  Sitting in front of a Danny the Brick, Robotman asks Jane, "We are going to get big again, right?"

"I don't know," Jane replies before we see tiny Robotman punching out a rat that may or may not be Mister Whiskers.  "Do you want to?"

Next, we see The Chief/Dr. Niles Caulder (Timothy Dalton) talking to Willoughby Kipling (Mark Sheppard) about the Doom Patrol's condition.  "Help me get these people big," the Chief begs.

"That kind of magic doesn't come for free," replies Kipling.

In a separate scene, Crazy Jane tells someone "Niles is dying" as we see the Chief in the middle of a street festival coughing up blood into his handkerchief.

In another scene, Elasti-Woman/Rita Farr (April Bowlby) asks the Chief, "How old are you exactly?"

"A hundred and thirty-nine," replies the Chief.

Rita immediately tears up.  "Dear God, he's practically dead."

Cliff facepalms at her reaction.  "Oh, boy.  Here come the water works."

As we see the Chief's daughter, Dorothy Spinner (Abigail Shapiro), inside a wooden cage, we hear Crazy Jane, who remarks to Rita and Cliff, "If Chief croaks, somebody's going to have to take care of the girl."

"She really that dangerous?" asks Cliff before we see his tiny robot self being flicked away by a large hairy spider.  In a separate scene, we see a full-sized Cliff flying through a billboard for Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man's new autobiography, My Side, featuring pull quotes from Doom Patrol comics writer Gerard Way and DC Comics supervillain Kite Man.

The Chief responds to Cliff's question, "Left to her own devices, she could unleash a being so powerful it would cleave the Earth in two."

As he says this, we see a brief glimpse of the Candlemaker, who confronts a past version of the Chief inside a circus tent.

Rita remarks, "The only thing keeping Dorothy from going full wildchild is us."

"Us?" protests Cliff.  "No way, it's every man, woman and brick for themselves now."

In a separate scene, Rita tells the Chief, "Time is what you need.  Where do we get more?"

In another scene, miniaturized Vic and Rita are standing on some model of a park.  "So, you want to become a superhero?" he asks.

Rita replies, "Is it wrong to desire mastery of one's limbs?"  She attempts to elongate her arm to reach for the models of a couple on a park bench, but falls short, irritating her.

Another scene follows, this time of Jane telling Cliff, "I need Chief."

"Why do you need him?" asks Cliff.

"Because shit's getting weird in the Underground," she explains as we see her assorted personalities at war with one another.  "I don't know how much longer I have before the rest of me has their way."

In another scene, the Chief and Rita open the door to Doom Manor to find a swarm of butterflies.  "I've been invited to a dinner with the divine Red Jack," the Chief says.

We then see Red Jack gouging out the eyes of his servant before driving a dagger into the dining table before the Chief.

We cut to Dorothy opening the front door to find a smiling Flex Mentallo (Devan Chandler Long) with a bunch of Dannyzens.  This leads to the Doom Patrol having a dance party on Danny the Street.

"Just a robot doing the robot," quips Cliff.

Suddenly, we see two members of the SeX-Men, a man and a woman, enter the club.  "Everyone keep your hands where we can see 'em," orders the man.

"You're in serious danger," adds the woman.

"What the hell are you?" asks an annoyed Vic.

"Baby, we're the SeX-Men," replies the woman, who has the nametag Torture.

"I have so many questions," remarks Jane.

If you'd like to check out the new trailer, you can view it below thanks to the official DC Comics account on YouTube...

DOOM PATROL Casts Abigail Shapiro as Dorothy Spinner

The Chief finally has a daughter!

TVLine has revealed that the DC Universe/HBO Max series Doom Patrol has cast newcomer Abigail Shapiro as DC Comics character Dorothy Spinner.  The role will be recurring during the show's upcoming second season.

In the TV version, Dorothy was revealed to be the daughter of Dr. Niles Caulder, a.k.a. The Chief (Timothy Dalton), and a primitive woman named Slava (Pisay Pao).  She first appeared in the Season One finale "Ezekiel Patrol", although her face wasn't shown.  In the series, Dorothy's existence motivated the Chief to cause the tragedies that created the Doom Patrol as part of a plan to extend his life so that he could continue to protect her.

According to the official description for Dorothy, "Niles loves her very much and has gone through great sacrifice to protect her, and the world, from her special abilities.  Now that she is no longer hidden, Niles will go to even greater lengths to protect her."

Shapiro, 19, is a newcomer from a singing and dancing background, having only appeared in the film shorts Broadway Kids Against Bullying: I Have a Voice and Broadway Support Lihsa.

Created in 1988 by Paul Kupperberg and Erik Larsen, Dorothy Spinner first appeared in Doom Patrol (vol.2) #14 as a young girl whose mother gave her up for adoption when Dorothy was a baby.  Dorothy suffered a facial deformity that gave her the appearance of an ape, complete with hairy arms.  Because of this, Dorothy grew up isolated from society, with only her imaginary friends for company.  She eventually discovered that she had the power to bring these "friends" to life.  Her imaginary friends taught her how to read and write, because she wasn't allowed to go to school and people thought that she would "scare" the other children.

Dorothy's psychological vulnerability made her the perfect target for the Candlemaker, a malignant egregore removed from our plane of existence eons ago who sought to come back through Dorothy's psychic ability.  One day, a group of boys had been teasing Dorothy brutally.  The Candlemaker appeared in her mind, and when she wished that one of the boys was dead, he happily obliged.  The next day, they found the boy disemboweled and crucified in a field.  Dorothy would spend the rest of her life blocking the Candlemaker in the deepest part of her mind.

She first encountered the Doom Patrol when the team was swallowed by a Chaos Lord named Pythia.  This happened near Dorothy's home and when she went to investigate, she was swallowed by Pythia as well.  Inside, she thought she witnessed the Doom Patrol and other heroes being killed, and pelted Pythia with rocks, which caused her pain and destroyed her.  Dorothy turned up again for the funeral of Doom Patrol member Celsius.

Dorothy soon joined the team, and quickly became problematic during an event involving Dorothy's first period and the Materioptikon, an old device used by former JLA villain Doctor Destiny.  The device boosted Dorothy's powers and brought back three of her old imaginary friends, Damn All, Darling-Come-Home, and Flying Robert (all nightmarish representations of her neglectful and abusive family), whom she killed with an imaginary gun.

During the Men from N.O.W.H.E.R.E. and Pentagon saga, Dorothy was on Danny the Street (a living genderqueer street) with Doom Patrol member Joshua Clay and Flex Mentallo (The Man of Muscle Mystery) when she was  kidnapped by the government-run Men from N.O.W.H.E.R.E. and taken to the sub-sub-basement of the Pentagon called the Ant Farm, a mechanical monstrosity and prison.  Strung up alongside kidnapped psychic Wallace Sage, who created Flex, they were going to be used to summon the Telephone Avatar, an all-powerful being made up of telephone parts.  In Dorothy's mind, the Candlemaker appeared once more, and promised that if she let him out for good, he would destroy the Men from N.O.W.H.E.R.E. and the Telephone Avatar.  Dorothy lapsed, and when she woke up the Candlemaker held true to his promise.

Following their departure from the Ant Farm, the Candlemaker began to haunt Dorothy's mind trying to get her to let him out.  Dorothy confessed to Joshua what had been bothering her, and about what the Candlemaker had done in the past.  She then collapsed from the strain he was putting on her mind, and when Joshua tried to find the Chief for help, the Chief shot him.  When Dorothy found Joshua's body, the Candlemaker told her that he will bring Josh to life if she lets him out.  She did so, and Josh was brought back to life, only to be killed seconds later.  Dorothy attempted to use a gun on the Candlemaker to no effect, but at that moment, computer programmed nanomachines that the Chief had created to cover the world, swarmed over him.  The Candlemaker still went after Dorothy, but Rebis, whom the Candlemaker had also killed, was resurrected in a new body.  Rebis attacked the Candlemaker and reduced him to a single flame that Dorothy put out.

Shapiro will be the first actress to portray the character in live action, although the back of an unknown actress' head was shown toward the end of "Ezekiel Patrol".  The character also appeared briefly in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode "The Last Patrol!" as one of the attractions at a freak show presented on a poster with the word "Spinner" written across it.

Doom Patrol is expected to return to DC Universe for Season 2 sometime in 2020.
