THE FLASH Casts Sugar Lyn Beard as Hazard

The Flash's world is about to come up snake eyes.

Variety has revealed that the CW series The Flash has cast Sugar Lyn Beard as Rebecca Sharpe, better known to DC Comics fans as the supervillain Hazard.

According to the article, Hazard will appear in the third episode of the show's fourth season and is described as "perpetually down-on her luck and is convinced her life is cursed — until a freak accident changes everything.  With the universe on her side, she poses a threat to both Team Flash and Central City."

Beard, 35, is a Canadian actress probably best known as Jeanie in the movie Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.  She's also appeared in the movies The Disaster Artist, Sausage Party and Aloha, and has appeared in episodes of Drunk History, You're the Worst, Garfunkel & Oates, The Mindy Project, Weeds, The Red Green Show, King of the Hill, and Sailor Moon.

Created in 1987 by Roy Thomas and Todd McFarlane, Hazard first appeared in Infinity, Inc. (vol.1) #34 as Rebecca "Becky" Sharpe, the granddaughter of Golden Age supervillain The Gambler, who had psionic powers that she used in conjunction with special dice to influence probability as she wished. Seeking to avenge the Gambler's suicide following multiple defeats at the hands of various superheroes, she became Hazard and joined a new incarnation of the Injustice Society that called itself Injustice Unlimited.

The group overcame the security at the International Trade Conference in Calgary, which consisted of Infinity, Inc. and a contingent of the Global Guardians, and forced the heroes to help in some mayhem.  Hazard took the second Wildcat and the Tasmanian Devil to Las Vegas and with their help, financially ruined Mr. Taj, the proprietor of the Taj Mahal Casino, which featured crooked games that were in part to blame for her grandfather's suicide.

Hazard encountered Infinity, Inc. once again with the villains Icicle and Artemis, along with the third Harlequin, Marcie Cooper, the Dummy, and a duped Solomon Grundy.  Under the leadership of the Dummy, their first goal was to murder the members of Infinity, Inc. so that the world and the criminal underworld would know and fear Injustice Unlimited.  Although Hazard had previously voiced an unwillingness to take life, she consented to the murder of Infinity, Inc.  Hazard joined with Harlequin and the Dummy to murder Pat Dugan, the former Stripesy, who worked at Stellar Studios that served as Infinity, Inc.'s headquarters.  When Pat's young son became a collateral target, Hazard used her powers of probability manipulation to help save their lives.  When the other heroes arrived at their headquarters and the battle was begun, Hazard feigned the loss of her dice and did not join in. Afterwards, when Injustice Unlimited was successfully defeated, Hazard voluntarily entered into custody for her role in the criminal events.

The Flash returns for Season 4 on October 10, 2017.

Wizard World Columbus 2017: Day Two Photos

As expected, Wizard World Comic Con Columbus 2017 was all kinds of busy on Saturday at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, with David Tennant, Catherine Tate, John Barrowman, Elizabeth Henstridge, Emma Caulfield, Nicholas Brendon, and a few others signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans.

Even with a pretty slim selection of comic book dealers and very few big name comic book creators, Saturday's attendance was all kinds of heavy.  I did some hardcover collection shopping, picked up a hell of a bargain on a great copy of The Flash (vol.1) #145 (Just $27!!!), and of course, got more great cosplay photos.

Here are some of my photos from Day Two...

X-23 and her younger Laura self

Aquaman from the DC Extended Universe.  I can dig it.

David Tennant tells an anecdote of how he can run faster than John Barrowman

The Thirteenth Doctor is here and it's about time!

John Barrowman quips "I have to say, I prefer things that are bigger on the inside."

Unfortunately, once again, there's not enough comic dealers or celebrity guests to justify attending Day Three this year, but if you'd like to see more pics from Wizard World Columbus, I've set up an album on my Facebook page HERE.  See you next year!

Wizard World Columbus 2017: Day One Photos

The first day of Wizard World Columbus 2017 inside the Greater Columbus Convention Center was pretty subdued.  Even though most people seem to be attending only on Saturday, there was a decent-sized crowd for what was essentially half a day at another typically overpriced Wizard World convention.  There were only a few celebrities around -- Barry Bostwick and Lou Ferrigno to name a couple -- so I spent most of the afternoon taking advantage of the smaller crowd to plug holes in my comic book collection.

As always, I managed to get some photos from inside the convention...Hope you enjoy them!

Caliban from the movie Logan

John Constantine flashes his business card (for reals).  He really should change it from Master of the Dark Arts to Petty Dabbler 'cause he hates to put on airs.

Great Scott!  It's Barry Bostwick from The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

W is for Wonder Woman and Wild Dog

It's bad enough that John Wick's dog was killed, but stuffing it into his suit pocket?

TITANS Casts Teagan Croft as Raven

The first Titan has been found.

Deadline reported yesterday that the upcoming DC Comics digital service TV series Titans, based on the superhero team the Teen Titans, has cast newcomer Teagan Croft as the supernatural superheroine Raven.

Raven is described in the article as "the daughter of a demon, (who) is a powerful empath (that) must keep her emotions in check or risk unleashing her demonic side."

Croft, 13, is an Australian actress who appeared in the television series Home and Away and the movie The Osiris Child.

Written by Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Discovery), DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns (The Flash, Arrow) and Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Legends Of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl), Titans follows a group of young soon-to-be superheroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe.  In the action-adventure series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes that includes Starfire, Raven and others.

Created in 1980 by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, Raven first appeared in DC Comics Presents #26 as the half human/half demon daughter of the interdimensional demon Trigon and Gotham City-born human Angela Roth (known as Arella).  Raven was conceived as the result of Trigon's marriage to Arella.  Raven grew up in an alternate dimension called Azarath, with pacifistic inhabitants whose spiritual leader was the mystic Azar.  She was taught to "control her emotions" by Azar, in order to suppress her inherited demonic powers.  Initially, it was feared that if Raven were ever to feel any strong emotion, she could then become possessed by her father's evil demonic energy inside of her.

During this time, Raven rarely saw her mother and grew detached from her.  Upon Azar's death, Arella began the task of raising and teaching Raven.  Around this same time, she met her father face to face for the first time.  Soon after her 18th birthday, Raven learned that Trigon planned to come to her dimension and she vowed to stop him.  Raven initially approached the Justice League for help, but they refused her on the advice of Zatanna, who sensed her demonic parentage.  In desperation, she reformed the Teen Titans to fight her father.  The team consisted of Robin, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl, Starfire, Cyborg, and Changeling (The former Beast Boy).  After defeating Trigon, Raven and her new friends soon came to think of one another as family.  Eventually, Trigon escaped his prison, came to Earth, and took control of Raven, destroying Azarath in the process.  The Titans were manipulated to kill Raven, thereby allowing the souls of Azarath contained inside the ring of Azar to possess her and use her as a channel to kill Trigon.  After this battle, Raven rose from the ashes, purged of Trigon's evil.

After the events of Flashpoint, the history of the DC Universe was altered, resulting in The New 52.  Raven made her New 52 debut in the first issue of the Phantom Strangershown as a girl in a black and white striped sweater who became distraught at a funeral over the level of overwhelming emotion that is emanating from the people there.  The Phantom Stranger took Raven to Stonehenge, the portal between Earth and the realm of Trigon. Being told by a "higher power" what must be done, the reluctant Stranger unwillingly handed her over to Trigon.  Raven made her first Teen Titans appearance in Teen Titans (vol.4) #16. sporting a new costume and ntroduced by Trigon as his "Black Bird of Terror" to his minions. Freeing herself from Trigon's control, she joined the Teen Titans and remained with them until that group's dissolution.  Raven went to San Francisco to learn more about her human relatives in San Francisco, where she was abducted by the current Robin Damian Wayne, who recruited her to be part of the new Teen Titans team he was establishing to take down his grandfather Ra's al Ghul.

This will be the first time the character will be portrayed in live action, although Raven has appeared in the animated projects Teen Titans, Teen Titans Go!, and Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo (voiced by Tara Strong). and Justice League vs. Teen Titans and Teen Titans: The Judas Contract (voiced by Taissa Farmiga).

Titans is slated to debut on DC's digital service sometime in 2018.

THE FLASH Casts Hartley Sawyer as Elongated Man

Is your nose suddenly twitching?

Entertainment Weekly has revealed that The CW series The Flash has cast Hartley Sawyer in the role of Ralph Dibny, better known to DC Comics fans as the ductile detective superhero the Elongated Man.  The role will be recurring throughout Season 4.

According to the article, the Elongated Man is described as "a fast-talking private investigator with investigative skills that rival those of Batman.  Upon discovering he has the power to stretch his body to any shape or form, Dibny uses his new abilities to help Team Flash solve one of Central City’s greatest mysteries."

The character was first mentioned in the Season 1 episode "Power Outage", as one of the people who seemingly died as a result of the particle accelerator accident that gave the Flash his powers.

Sawyer, 32, has previously appeared in the CW Seed series Saving the Human Race, and episodes of The McCarthys, Suburgatory, The Young and the Restless, NCIS: Los Angeles, Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, GCB, and Glory Daze.

Created in 1960 by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, the Elongated Man first appeared in The Flash (vol.1) #112 as Ralph Dibny, who as a teenager, was fascinated by contortionists, or people who displayed feats of agility and suppleness.  He learned that all of the body-benders he spoke with drank a popular soda called "Gingold."  Ralph set to work learning chemistry and developed a super-concentrated extract of the rare "gingo" fruit of the Yucatan, which gave him his elasticity.  In his first appearance, the Flash suspected the Elongated Man was behind several crimes, but the Elongated Man helped capture the criminals, who revealed they used a helicopter to frame him.

The Elongated Man was one of the earliest Silver Age DC heroes to reveal his secret identity to the public, and also one of the first to marry his love interest, Sue Dearborn.  After teaming up with several other superheroes like Batman, Green Lantern, the Atom, and Zatanna, he became a member of the Justice League of America.  In the event series Identity Crisis, Sue was murdered in their apartment, apparently dying of burns.  The autopsy of Sue Dibny's body by Doctor Mid-Nite and Mister Terrific, members of the Justice Society, revealed Sue was killed by an infarction in her brain.  A microscopic scan of Sue's brain also revealed tiny footprints as a clue to the infarction's cause, ultimately leading to Sue's killer, Jean Loring, the insane ex-wife of Ralph's Justice League teammate The Atom.

Sue's death had a significant effect on Ralph, compounded by the fact that Sue was apparently pregnant at the time of her death.  In the weekly series 52Ralph contemplated suicide after being informed that Sue's gravestone was vandalized with an inverted version of Superman's 'S' symbol — the Kryptonian symbol for resurrection.  He confronted the second Wonder Girl, Cassie Sandsmark, who told Dibny that she was in a cult that believed that Superboy could be resurrected.  She stole Ralph's wedding ring after the cult members attempted to drown Ralph.  Wonder Girl later tells Ralph that Sue's clothes and ring were stolen to make an effigy of Sue for a mystical ceremony.  Ralph went to the ceremony to disrupt it, but the effigy of Sue crawled to Dibny and called out to him as it burned.  As a result, Ralph suffered a nervous breakdown.  The evil sorcerer Felix Faust soon attempted to trade Ralph's soul to Neron in exchange for his own freedom.  Ralph revealed that he had been aware of Faust's identity for some time and created a binding spell to imprison Faust. Neron appeared and killed Dibny, only to realize too late that the binding spell responded only to Ralph's commands:  With his death, Ralph trapped Faust and Neron, seemingly for eternity, His spirit was later seen reunited with his wife Sue, and the two became ghost detectives.

In the current New 52 continuity, Ralph was reintroduced as a rogue member of the Secret Six, under the alias of Damon Wells a.k.a. Big Shot, who reported to the Riddler.  After having reunited with his wife Sue, Ralph made his return as the costumed Elongated Man.

Sawyer will be the first actor to portray the Elongated Man in live action, although the character has appeared in a few animated projects, including Justice League Unlimited (voiced by Jeremy Piven), Batman: The Brave and the Bold (voiced by Sean Donnellan), and Mad (voiced by Ralph Garman).

The Flash returns to The CW for Season 4 on Tuesday, October 10th at 8 p.m. EST.

KRYPTON Teases Adam Strange & Conspiracy Against Superman's Legacy

Stranger things are about to happen on Superman's home planet.

One of the more intriguing items to come out of last weekend's San Diego Comic-Con 2017 was the panel for the upcoming Syfy series Krypton, based on the lore of DC Comics character Superman.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and SyfyWire, DC Comics President and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns moderated the panel in the Indigo Ballroom with star Cameron Cuffe and showrunners Cameron Welsh and Damian Kindler.  Johns revealed some curious details about the show's premise, including that it's going to exist in its own self-contained TV universe and have no crossovers with DC shows on The CW.

"It's a show that, although it takes place centuries ago on Krypton about the House of El," said Johns, "it's about a conspiracy from the present that has traveled back in time to Krypton to prevent Superman's legacy from ever happening."

Johns continued, "Adam Strange and Hawkwoman come to Krypton trying to stop the conspiracy and save Superman's legacy.  Doomsday will be in the show.  Brainiac is long overdue to be on screen like that."  In addition, the Kryptonian versions of Nightwing and Flamebird will appear because Johns feels "that's a huge part of the canon, so no way we can't do that."  He also mentioned that the mind-manipulating plant known as the Black Mercy will also be in play.

"We've been keeping that under wraps," said Kindler about Brainiac.  "He has a really deep, rich history.  He is the nexus point between man and machine, which is an incredibly real thing to talk about now."

The creators reportedly knew that setting the series in the past wouldn't be compelling enough, so they had to connect it to the present.  "It changes the stakes of the show completely," remarked Welsh.  "It's not a look backwards. It's quite unique. It allows us to deepen and expand upon the known mythology."

Johns also recited Adam Strange's introduction speech from memory.  "I'm from a planet called Earth, my name is Adam Strange. I come from a time long after this and I need you to help me save the legacy of your grandson.  There are others [from Earth] already on Krypton and as the series progresses, we'll bring in some more [classic DC characters]."

Welsh remarked that their version of Adam Strange is "a little more cynical.  He's got gallows humor.  He's been around for a while."

Krypton will debut on Syfy sometime in 2018.

SUPERGIRL Casts Adrian Pasdar as Morgan Edge

Supergirl is getting some Edge in Season 3.

One of the overlooked items from this past weekend's San Diego Comic Con 2017 was news that The CW series Supergirl has cast Adrian Pasdar as DC Comics villain Morgan Edge.

According to Deadline, Morgan Edge is described as "a ruthless real estate developer who will stop at nothing to get what he wants.  The DC villain’s big plans for National City instantly put him at odds with Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath)."

Pasdar, 52, is best known as Nathan Petrelli on Heroes, and has had a number of comic book related roles, including Glenn Talbot on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the voices of Captain America in the 2010 Black Panther motion comic series, Hawkeye on The Super Hero Squad Show, Professor Hugo Strange on Young Justice, and Iron Man on Marvel Anime: Iron Man, Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes United.  He's also appeared on episodes of Colony, Castle, Judging Amy, Desperate Housewives, and the 2002 version of The Twilight Zone.

Created in 1970 by Jack Kirby, Morgan Edge first appeared in Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #133 as the president of the Galaxy Broadcasting System, the media corporation which eventually bought the Daily Planet.  Edge was a ruthless capitalist, disrupting the Planet and challenging the authority of the somewhat older Perry White, but he was a decent man who maintained reasonably friendly relationships with most of his employees, including Clark Kent.  Following the takeover of the Planet, Edge transferred Kent to the news division, making him a traveling correspondent and later anchorman on WGBS.  For a while it appeared that Edge was connected to the Apokolips-sponsored crime organization Intergang, but this was revealed to be a clone created by the Evil Factory, a genetics laboratory working for Darkseid.  This clone attempted to have Jimmy Olsen and the Guardian murdered as part of a cover-up.

In the The New 52 reboot of the DC Comics Universe, Morgan Edge appeared as a powerful and self-centered media mogul and the new owner of the Daily Planet.  He was seen as the sponsor of the Challengers of the Unknown program before they all left due to his ruthless business strategy.  Prior to DC Rebirth, in the last issue of the 2011-16 Justice League series, it was mentioned that Lex Luthor had bought the Daily Planet from Edge.

Pasdar will be the third actor to portray Morgan Edge in live action, after Rutger Hauer and Patrick Bergin on Smallville.  The character also appeared in the animated series Justice League, voiced by Brian George.

Supergirl returns to The CW for Season 3 on October 9th.
