Stephen Amell Announces ARROW Will End in Fall 2019

Arrow is ending, but the Arrowverse lives on.

Actor Stephen Amell, the star of the CW series Arrow, has announced via his official Twitter account that the long-running superhero drama will end this fall with a final Season 8 run of ten episodes.  Amell, who plays DC Comics superhero Green Arrow/Oliver Queen, posted the following:
The news that Season 8 of Arrow will only be ten episodes long makes it likely that the show will lead directly into the Fall 2019 Arrowverse crossover event "Crisis on Infinite Earths", based on the classic DC Comics maxi-series from 1985-86.  In the DC comic book series, notable superheroes Supergirl and The Flash were killed off, which now leads to speculation about whether Green Arrow will die during the Arrowverse crossover.

Amell also posted a livestream video on his Facebook account, thanking both the Arrow production team and, of course, the show's fans.  In addition, he explained exactly why the show will be ending, detailing the various aspects that ultimately led to the decision.

He remarked, "Towards the end of Season 6, I approached [executive producer] Greg Berlanti, who I will be thanking in a second, and said that I thought, both personally and professionally, that at the end of my commitment this coming season it would be the best for me to move on.  I've always been a fan of television shows that not only don't overstay their welcome, but end in a manner that really packs a punch.  And so, it had always been my hope that we would know when we were gonna finish this journey and not limp to the finish line, so to speak.

"After a lot of discussion, Greg and I decided that the best way to do this would be to have me come back for a limited run in Season 8, which is what we're gonna do.  And, from there, I had always hoped that beyond the seventeen different shows that Arrow has spawned (I'm kidding, it's only like sixteen) that there was a possibility that the show could live on beyond me, because the entity of Oliver Queen and the character, and the mythos, and the iconography of Green Arrow has always been something that's bigger than me or any other actor that's playing him or voicing him.  There's always been something more to it.

"I spoke with [showrunner] Beth Schwartz and [series creator] Marc Guggenheim this past Friday, and then Greg Berlanti this past Friday night, and it was the decision of WB and CW and Beth and Greg and Marc, in a very mutual way, based off of what they thought was best for the show creatively and being very honorable and respectful as it pertains to my wishes, that we were gonna end after a 10-episode run next year."

From there, Amell addressed the personal reasons for his decision.  "Even though I've known that this is coming, it is still a very emotional time, because I have been on the show in what can only be described as a fundamentally transformational, nearly decade-long run in my life.  (As someone) who started as an actor who doesn't have a lot of experience, who was, you know, sort of dating someone, to now...a large part of this decision being because I am now a father and a husband and a lot of my life and interests now don't really reside in Vancouver anymore and thinking that that's the best thing for me personally and professionally.  To say that it has been a real sea change over the past seven plus years would be a vast understatement."

Arrow Season 7 currently airs on Monday nights at 8 p.m. on The CW, with Season 8 airing sometime this fall.

STAR TREK: PICARD Casts Santiago Cabrera & Michelle Hurd

Jean-Luc Picard has two new shipmates.

Deadline has word that CBS All Access' upcoming still-untitled Star Trek series starring Sir Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard has cast Santiago Cabrera and Michelle Hurd in co-starring roles.

According to the article, Cabrera will play "the pilot of Picard’s ship who also is a skillful thief."  Hurd, meanwhile, is playing "a former intelligence officer who is a brilliant analyst with a terrific memory that has not been affected by her drug and alcohol abuse."

Cabrera, 40, is a Venezuelan-born Chilean-British actor, known for his roles as the character Isaac Mendez in the TV series Heroes, Lancelot in Merlin, and Aramis in The Musketeers.  In addition, he's appeared in the movie Transformers: The Last Knight and in episodes of Salvation, Big Little Lies, Dexter, Alcatraz, and Covert Affairs.

Hurd, 52, is probably best known as D.A. Samantha Reyes in the Netflix series Daredevil and Jessica Jones, and as the superhero Fire in CBS' failed 1997 Justice League of America pilot.  In addition, she's appeared in episodes of Lethal Weapon, Blindspot, Ash vs. Evil Dead, How to Get Away with Murder, Hawaii Five-0 (2014), 90210, The Good Wife, Bones, Charmed (2005), The Fugitive (2001), and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

The new series will be set twenty years after the events of the film Star Trek: Nemesis and will tell the next chapter of Picard's life.  Hanelle Culpepper will direct the first two episodes of the series, making her the first woman to direct a pilot or debut episode of a Star Trek series in the franchise’s 53-year history.

As Captain of the USS Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E, Jean-Luc Picard first appeared in the 1987 Star Trek: Next Generation pilot episode "Encounter at Farpoint" and remained with the series for its entire seven-season run.  Stewart also portrayed Picard in the movies Star Trek Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), along with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘s 1993 pilot episode, "Emissary."

New DARK PHOENIX Trailer Teases the X-Men's Last Stand

Start planning your drinking game for every time Cyclops shouts "Jean!"

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for Dark Phoenix, their final X-Men film before the movie rights move to Disney/Marvel Studios.  In the film, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) is nearly killed during a space mission when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force.  Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable.  Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain.  With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together.  Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

The two-minute, 20-second trailer opens with Jean sitting and crying in an alley as rain pours down upon her.  Visibly upset and shaken, Jean asks the cosmic force inside her, "Why did you make me do that?"

We cut to what presumably happened, with the various X-Men confronting Jean in a small neighborhood.  "Look at me," says Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) to Jean.  "Focus on my voice.  I'm not giving up on you, Jean."

Cutting back to the alley, Jean tells the Phoenix force, "She was my friend."

Back to the neighborhood scene, Mystique continues in a reassuring tone, "You're my family, Jean.  No matter what."

"Stop...Stop...Stop..." mutters Jean, clutching her head as the edges of her face crack with lines of energy.  Bellowing a final "STOP!!!", she sends Mystique flying, hinting that Jean murdered her after that moment.

We then see Jessica Chastain's white-haired, still-unnamed character trying to manipulate Jean.  "Look," she says, altering the room around her.  "You're special, Jean.  And if you stop fighting that force inside you, if you embrace it, you will possess the very power of a god."

Next, we see the X-Men aboard their ship in Earth's orbit, watching as a NASA space shuttle is swallowed up by a whirlpool of cosmic force.  Jean, inside the shuttle, screams and appears to be consumed by the cosmic energy until it's drawn inside her.

Back to the neighborhood, Professor X/Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) look on in horror at whatever Jean did to Mystique.

We cut to a rainy funeral scene, presumably Mystique's, with Beast (Nicholas Hoult) looking down and understandably sad.

Inside Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, we see a tense standoff with Xavier, Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Jean, with Xavier remarking, "She'll kill us all."  Jean has Magento in her telekinetic grasp and starts crushing his metal helmet tightly around his face.

"Tell me how we fix this, Charles," Cyclops asks in a separate scene inside Cerebro.  "Tell me what to do!"

"I don't know what to do!" Xavier shouts back.

Next, we see Jessica Chastain's character on a rooftop at night, saying in a voiceover, "What they don't understand, they fear."  Cutting to the conversation she's having with Jean, Chastain's character says, "And what they fear..."

"They seek to destroy," finishes Jean.

Back to the neighborhood sequence, we see Quicksilver (Evan Peters) running at super-speed across flying debris in mid-air towards Jean, then cut to a scene of a human-looking Beast having a drink after the funeral and telling Xavier, "This is your fault, Charles."

"I tried to protect her," Xavier remarks in a voiceover.

"I'm scared," Jean says in another scene.  "And when I lose control, bad things happen to people I love."

"The girl dies," remarks Magneto in a different scene.

"She's still Jean," Cyclops says in a post-funeral scene.  "We can still help her."

And in another scene, we see Magneto using his powers of magnetism to levitate and fire several rifles at what may be Chastain's character.  A voiceover from Storm (Alexandra Shipp) remarks, "Sometimes, you want to believe people are something that they are not.  By the time you realize who they are, it's too late."

In the trailer's final scene, we see Professor X, Magneto and the X-Men held captive with power-cancelling collars aboard a train car overseen by armed guards.  Hearing a groan of metal, Magneto remarks, "She's coming."

The guards aim their weapons towards the main door, which buckles, causing the guards to open fire.  Outside, we see the train twisting around and coming off the track, levitating into the air as Jean controls it from above.

If you'd like to view the trailer, you can see it below thanks to the official 20th Century Fox account on YouTube...

Dark Phoenix is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 7, 2019.

TITANS Casts Joshua Orpin as Superboy/Conner Kent

Begun this clone's war has.

Deadline is reporting that the DC Universe series Titans has cast Joshua Orpin as Conner Kent, better known to DC Comics fans as Kon-El, a.k.a. Superboy!  The character was previously teased in a post-credits scene at the end of the Titans Season 1 finale, "Dick Grayson", and factors heavily into the show's upcoming second season.

According to the article, Superboy is described as "Superboy, a.k.a. Conner Kent, is the angsty teenager of steel searching for purpose and the truth about his past.  While looking for answers, he crashes into the world of the Titans where he finds an unlikely home and surrogate family as well as revelations that carry more complications than he ever bargained for."

Orpin, 24, is a 6'1" Australian actor who will be seen in the upcoming Foxtel drama series Upright and his most recent appearance was in The Blake Mysteries: Ghost Stories for the Seven Network in Australia.  In addition, he was in the film The Neon Spectrum.

Created in 1993 by Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett, the Conner Kent Superboy first appeared in The Adventures of Superman #500.  After the death of Superman at the hands of the supervillain Doomsday, Project Cadmus Executive Director Paul Westfield wanted to create a clone replacement of Superman that would follow the agendas of Project Cadmus as well as his own personal agenda.  After failed attempts to acquire Superman's DNA (which included an attempt to steal his corpse), Westfield decided to genetically alter a human clone to look like Superman and made the clone to be the closest human equivalent to a Kryptonian as they could based on their research.  During their research when they had Superman's body, Westfield's scientists discovered a bio-electric aura surrounding Superman's body that provided some of Superman's powers such as invulnerability, flight through a form of self-telekinesis, protection from getting dirty and protection from skin-tight clothing to be damaged. The aura was translated into a telekinetic field for a human that would give the clone the ability to simulate Superman's powers such as flight, invulnerability, and strength. This was later known as "tactile telekinesis" by the scientists.

After twelve failed attempts, the clone known as Experiment 13 was grown from a single cell to a teenage boy in less than a week and was a complete success.  The clone was given implanted memories and underwent an artificial maturation process intended to match the age of the original Superman.  This clone was released from his cloning tube too early, however, and emerged as a teenager.  While at first calling himself "Superman", he would later be known as Superboy.

A defining moment in Superboy's life came following Superman's resurrection, when he asked Superboy to come with him to the Fortress of Solitude.  After explaining how he considered Superboy part of his family, Superman offered him the Kryptonian name Kon-El.  Superboy tearfully accepted, overjoyed with the simple joy of having a real name, and would eventually accept the everyday name "Conner."  After Cadmus was shut down, Superboy had no job and no place to stay.  He relocated to Metropolis, becoming the "super" at a tenement building called Calvin Gardens.  Eventually Superman invites him to stay with his parents in Smallville, which he gladly accepted and did for quite some time.  Superboy soon became a founding member of Young Justice, a group of teenage heroes who intended to be the next Justice League one day.

Later basing himself in Smallville with a new civilian identity as Clark Kent's cousin "Conner Kent", Superboy was asked by Superman to accept Cyborg's invitation to join a new incarnation of the Teen Titans with his former Young Justice teammates Robin, Impulse, and Wonder Girl.  Other members of the team were Teen Titans veterans Cyborg, Starfire, and Beast Boy.  After the new team gathered at Titans Tower in San Francisco Bay, it was revealed via an email sent to Robin that Superboy's human DNA was not from Paul Westfield, but from Superman's arch-enemy, Lex Luthor.

Orpin will be the second actor to portray the Conner Kent Superboy in live-action, after Lucas Grabeel in the CW series Smallville.  The character has also appeared in various animated projects, including Young Justice (voiced by Nolan North), Teen Titans Go!, The Death of Superman, and the Reign of the Supermen TV movie (voiced by Cameron Monaghan).

Titans is expected to return to DC Universe for Season 2 sometime in Fall 2019.

Deadline has word that the CW pilot Batwoman, based on the DC Comics superhero, has cast Dougray Scott as Jacob Kane, father to Batwoman/Kate Kane and her sister Alice/Beth Kane.

According to the article, Jacob Kane is described as "a former military colonel with a chip on his shoulder for Batman, Jacob Kane now commands Gotham’s private security firm The Crows, and has made it his mission to protect his city better than the Dark Knight ever could.  But it’s only a matter of time before his unwavering disdain for vigilantes puts him at odds with Gotham’s new caped crusader…who also happens to be his own daughter."

The pilot for the proposed series, starring Ruby Rose as Batwoman/Kate Kane, is written by writer Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries) and will now be directed by Marcos Siega instead of David Nutter.  Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.

Scott, 53, is a Scottish actor best known as the villainous Sean Ambrose in Mission: Impossible 2 and as Alec Palmer in the Doctor Who episode "Hide".  In addition, he's played Thomas Abigail on AMC's Fear the Walking Dead and has appeared in episodes of Highlander: The Series, Desperate Housewives, Sinbad, and Heist.  His other films include Ever After, Deep Impact, Dark Water, Hitman, My Week with Marilyn, and Taken 3.

Created in 2009 by Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III, Jacob Kane first appeared in Detective Comics (vol.1) #854 as Colonel Jacob Kane, the father of Kate Kane and an ally of Batwoman.  Colonel Kane is a lifelong soldier and highly-decorated Colonel, and had been a field officer with USSOCOM for most of his career, leading numerous tactical operations across the globe.  His wife, Gabi Kane, was a Captain with the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade.  Both Kanes worked extensively with military intelligence services.

Jacob and Gabi had identical twin daughters, Kate and Beth, and the family frequently moved due to the nature of Jacob and Gabi's work.  Jacob was often away from home, since his duties included intervention in various international military crises.

The Kane family eventually moved to Brussels in Belgium, since the parents were now serving at NATO.  However, the family was soon torn apart due to a terrorist attack.  Gabi took her daughters out to celebrate their twelfth birthday, and they were kidnapped by heavily armed men.  Military intelligence eventually located the hostages, and Jacob was put in charge of the tactical unit sent to rescue them.  However, they were too late, as his wife had been executed and his daughter Elizabeth was believed to be dead.  He rescued Kate himself, but she was traumatized by the sight of her dead mother and sister.

Colonel Kane played an important role in his daughter's Batwoman operations.  He provided her a one-man command, control, and communication center.  They stayed in constant radio link, with the elder Kane being able to run searches, provide advice, and generally work in the background, using his considerable knowledge, contacts and experience.  He had access to numerous databases that were normally only accessible to military and law enforcement personnel to provide intel to his daughter.

Later, Kane founded The Colony, a U.S. government-funded military organization which operates in Gotham City.  The organization is dedicated to studying the work of Batman and aims to create an army of soldiers trained in his image.  When Batman discovered surveillance equipment monitoring him, he investigated and found his allies were being monitored as well, particularly Batwoman.  These events inspired the two heroes to unite and begin training a team of young vigilantes.  Later, Jacob Kane commanded an attack on the heroes, revealing himself as the leader of the Colony to his daughter.

Jacob Kane commanded a drone strike on members of the League of Shadows, who were operating in Gotham, despite the likely potential of civilian casualties.  In order to prevent the attack, Red Robin hacked the drones and ordered them to concentrate on a single target instead -- himself.  Red Robin sacrificed himself, and seemingly died as a result, though in reality he was abducted and imprisoned by Mister Oz.

This will be the first time Jacob Kane will appear in live action, although the character previously appeared in the animated movie Batman: Bad Blood, voiced by Geoff Pierson.
