DC Comics Announces Live-Action TITANS Series for New Digital Service

Titans Together...in 2018!

DC Comics has announced that a new live-action Titans series, based on the Teen Titans characters, will debut in 2018 on what they describe as an "upcoming DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service."

According to the press release, "Titans follows a group of young soon-to-be superheroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe.  In this action-packed series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes, including Starfire, Raven and many others.  Titans is a dramatic, live-action adventure series that will explore and celebrate one of the most popular comic book teams ever."

Titans will be written by Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Discovery, Underground), Geoff Johns (President & Chief Creative Officer, DC Entertainment; The Flash, Arrow) and Greg Berlanti (Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl). Goldsman, Johns, Berlanti and Sarah Schechter (Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl) are executive producers of the series from Weed Road Pictures and Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

The series appears to be similar to the proposed Titans live-action series first announced in September 2014 that was reportedly nearing a pilot order at TNT.  In January 2016, however, the proposed series was reported to be dead at TNT, only for word to come a month later that DC still had plans for the series.  And now, it seems we know what those plans were.

The announcement that Nightwing, Starfire and Raven will be team members on Titans seems to hint that the classic '80s comic book series The New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez will be the basis for the drama.  The series was very successful for DC at the time, rivaling Marvel Comics' The Uncanny X-Men in terms of sheer popularity.

First appearing in DC Comics Presents #26 in 1980, the New Teen Titans were a new team of Teen Titans featuring original members Robin (who later becomes Nightwing), Wonder Girl (who later becomes Troia) and Kid Flash, along with former Doom Patrol member Beast Boy as Changeling and new characters Cyborg, Raven and Starfire.  Brought together by Raven to fight her demonic father Trigon, the seven teenaged heroes continued as a team to fight such notable villains as Deathstroke the Terminator, the Fearsome Five, Brother Blood, Blackfire, the H.I.V.E., the Brotherhood of Evil and more.

In addition, DC Comics also announced Young Justice: Outsiders, the third season of Warner Bros. Animation’s Young Justice, will also debut next year on the new DC digital service.

Marvel Attempts Rebirth in Fall 2017 with MARVEL LEGACY

The House of Ideas is about to use DC's idea from last year.

During the "Marvel: Next Big Thing" panel at the 2017 Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo this past weekend, Marvel announced Marvel Legacy, a new initiative intended to "return long running titles to their original series numbering with a renewed sense of hope, wonder, enjoyment and fun."

The Marvel Legacy initiative will explore the Marvel Universe, with storylines starring characters such as Odinson, Squirrel Girl, Spider-Man, the Avengers, America Chavez, Iron Man, Moon Knight, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, the X-Men, Captain America, Ms. Marvel, Deadpool, the Champions, Wolverine, Ironheart, Hulk, The Punisher, and more.

To seasoned comic book fans, however, this translates as Marvel's attempt to recapture lost sales that have shifted over to DC Comics following that company's successful DC Rebirth relaunch last June after The New 52.  The most recent Top 100 Comics chart from Diamond Comic Distributors shows Marvel only having 19 of the Top 50 comics in March 2017, compared to DC Comics claiming 28.  The Top 20 numbers slant even more in DC's favor, with DC having 13 compared to Marvel only having 5, with 2 of those being Star Wars titles.

And just like DC's well-received 80-page one-shot DC Universe: Rebirth #1, Marvel Comics will launch their own rebirth in the fall with Marvel Legacy #1, a 50-page one-shot "stuffed with twists, surprises, mysteries and revelations, plus a special four-panel fold-out cover by Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada."

Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic of Thor: God of Thunder fame will be the creative team.  "This one-shot honors Marvel Comics’ past and it’s a good window into the present day Marvel Universe and then also sets the stage for where we’re gonna go in the future," said Aaron. "The main goal was just to be able to give this to someone who’s got no idea what’s going on in the Marvel right now and have that be a good entry point for them and I think it does that."

As for the plot of Marvel Legacy, Aaron remarked, "We get a peek into the very distant past here so we go back to the prehistoric days of the Marvel Universe.  [We are] seeing versions of Marvel’s biggest legacy characters and different versions we haven’t seen before and [an adventure] of, I guess I could call 'the Prehistoric Avengers.'  That adventure will have major ramifications for the Marvel Universe going forward."

Aaron added, "This one shot being called Legacy is not a coincidence.  This book is very much about that legacy so we see how that legacy stretches back to the distant past and we follow those characters who carry on that legacy in the present and we set the stage for those characters and that legacy will go in the continuing stories to come."

Marvel’s Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso said, "We want fans to get fired up, simple as that. Marvel Legacy will decide once and for all if the Marvel Universe is big enough for Miles and Peter, Riri and Tony, Thor and Jane Foster, Laura and, dare I say, Logan?  Spoiler alert: It
is."

Alonso also promised "a last-page reveal that just might break the Internet", while editor Tom Brevoort promised "the return of a central piece of the Marvel mythos that readers have been mourning in recent months."  The Fantastic Four, perhaps?

And after Marvel Legacy #1?  According to Marvel, long-running Marvel Universe titles will "revert to their classic legacy numbering, honoring and restoring their long history, as new and epic storylines launch under the Marvel Legacy banner.  Featuring clean entry points for every series, titles resuming their original numbering will be clearly marked with special trade dress and cover treatments."

So, just like DC Rebirth then.  We'll see if Marvel Legacy is a lasting one...

Marvel's CLOAK & DAGGER Debuts First Trailer

Get excited to see Cloak and Dagger...one year from now.

Marvel Entertainment has released the first trailer for the upcoming Freeform television series Cloak & Dagger, based on the Marvel Comics superhero duo.  In the series, Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two teenagers from different backgrounds, acquire superpowers while forming a romantic relationship.  They soon realize that their powers work better when they are together, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.

The one minute, 45-second trailer opens with young Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) remembering seeing his father confronted by police when he was a young boy, while young Tandy (Olivia Holt) is shown as a young girl training for ballet.

A flashback to a car accident is shown, as Tandy tells her criminal partner and boyfriend Liam (Carl Lundstedt), "Did I ever tell you about that night?"

We see young Tyrone diving into water to rescue young Tandy after her parents' car goes off a bridge.  It seems the two are destined to be together.

Switching to the modern day, we see fleeting images of Tyrone getting into a fight during a basketball game, while Melissa Bowen (Andrea Roth), Tandy's mother, is upset as the police search their house for something.  "You can't do this!" she cries.

"It's like if I don't do everything perfectly, you're gonna lose me," Tyrone says to his mother, Adina Johnson (Gloria Reuben).

"I'm afraid even if you do everything perfectly, I'm gonna lose you," replies Adina, tearing up.

The two manage to bump into one another and introduce themselves.  Tyrone gets mixed up with some criminals and is almost shot after escaping from the trunk of a car.

Later, we see Tyrone and Tandy running together in a graveyard at night, but as the two grab hands, a sudden burst of light emits from Tandy's hand, sending Tyrone flying.  Tandy stares at her glowing hand, then looks over at Tyrone for understanding.

We see a fleeting image of young Tandy and young Tyrone lying together on the shore, holding hands after Tyrone rescued Tandy.  Back in the present day, a guy attempts to force himself on Tandy, only to find himself stabbed in the stomach by a glowing dagger of light that Tandy somehow created.

Lastly, we see Tyrone waking up on a rooftop, dressed in a cloak.  He looks up and sees a sign belonging to the Roxxon Corporation, a fictional energy corporation from the Marvel Universe that is traditionally up to unethical and illegal activities.

If you'd like to view the trailer, you can check it out below thanks to IGN on YouTube...

Cloak & Dagger is expected to debut on Freeform sometime in 2018.

First KRYPTON Pilot Trailer Leaks Online

Is Krypton about to explode onto Syfy?

The first look at the pilot for Syfy's proposed series Krypton, based on lore of the DC Comics character Superman, has been leaked online.  The series will follow Superman's grandfather – whose House of El was ostracized and shamed – as he fights to redeem his family's honor and save his beloved world from chaos.

The 90-second trailer opens with the voice of Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), Superman's grandfather.  "Kal-El," he begins, "my future grandson.  By the time you hear these words,
your birthworld will be a distant memory."

"The house of El led a revolution against tyranny," he continues.  "The story of your family isn't how we died...but how we lived.  I know you will fight to save your world, just as I fought to save mine."

We see Val-El, Seg's grandfather, handing him an access key similar to the one used in the movie Man of Steel.  "Find the fortress," says Val-El.

"Your name is El -- Never forget it," remarks another character.

"The blood of House El will always bind us together," remarks Seg-El to Lyta Zod (Georgina Campbell) as he slices his palm with an ornate knife and squeezes his palm, dripping blood onto the access panel.

If picked up to series, Krypton is expected to debut on Syfy sometime in 2017.

First STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Trailer Teases Luke Ending the Jedi

The Jedi may soon face their end...if Luke Skywalker gets his way.

The first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was revealed earlier today at the Star Wars Celebration convention in Orlando, Florida, giving Star Wars fans their first taste of the upcoming Episode VIII directed by Rian Johnson.

The two minute teaser opens on the oceanic planet Ahch-To, last seen at the very end of the previous film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  We see Rey (Daisy Ridley) gasping for air, presumably during part of her training in the Force by Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) as teased in 2015.

"Breathe..." says Luke calmly, "...just breathe.  Now, reach out..."

We see Rey raising pebbles into the air as Luke asks, "What do you see?"

"Light..." replies Rey as we glimpse General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) from behind in the command center of the Resistance base.

"Darkness..." continues Rey as we see the smoldering remains of Kylo Ren's helmet, which appears to have been crushed.

"A balance..." Rey remarks as we see a bookshelf and a page from one of the books that contains some sort of lightsaber icon.

Next, we see a faraway shot of Luke instructing Rey in the use of her lightsaber as he says "It's so much bigger," presumably referring to the power of the Force.

We then see a several fighters streaking across a field towards a line of First Order Walkers. They’re dragging something on the ground, sending up a plume of red dust or smoke.  As we watch, one hits the ground and bounces up.

Finn (John Boyega) turns up next in some sort of stasis pod, still recovering from his injuries at the hands of Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens.  This is followed by a quick shot of Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and his droid BB-8 racing towards Poe's X-Wing as the Resistance base appears to be under attack.

More fleeting images follow, including the Millennium Falcon destroying a TIE fighter and Rey racing towards something with her lightsaber activated.

"I only know one truth..." Luke begins as Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (Adam Driver) is shown with his cross-hilt lightsaber, sporting a nasty scar across his face from where Rey sliced him in The Force Awakens.

We glimpse Luke and R2-D2 (Jimmy Vee) looking over some burning ruins, similar the flashback scene teased in The Force Awakens where Luke places his metal hand on R2. Quick images follow, including Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) and some First Order stormtroopers, along with an intense battle between Resistance ships and TIE fighters.

"...it's time for the Jedi to end," finishes Luke ominously as his shadowy outline can be seen at the entrance of a cave on Ahch-To, and a dark, dramatic version of the Star Wars theme ends the teaser.

If you'd like to view the teaser trailer, you can check it out below thanks to the official Star Wars account on YouTube...

In addition, the first teaser poster for The Last Jedi was also released...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 15, 2017.
